Manchester United defender Jonny Evans could be on his way to Everton this summer in a deal that is rumoured to be around the £10 million mark. It has long been known that Roberto Martinez has admired the versatile Northern Irishman and is looking to replace outgoing veteran defenders Sylvain Distin and Antolin Alcaraz, who will both be leaving Goodison Park at the end of the season.
United are believed to want to sell Evans in order to make way for incoming defensive options, having been thought to be interested in both Valencia’s Nicolas Otamendi and Borrussia Dortmund’s Mats Hummels. This leaves The 27 year old centre half/full back low down the pecking order at Old Trafford, having had injury problems this season which have restricted him to just 17 first team appearances this campaign.
Although Martinez handed youngster Brendan Galloway his full debut in Saturdays 2-1 win at West Ham, the Everton boss will be looking for experinced bodies to come into the side for next season, in order to tackle the defensive frailty of the team and Evans fits the bill perfectly. The Northern Irish international could form a strong central partnership with Phil Jagielka but his flexibility would allow Martinez to use him anywhere along the back line.
A fresh start could be just the thing needed to reviltalise Evans’ career as well, which has stagnated a little in recent months. Injuries have beset his season and the six game ban he recieved for spitting at Newcastle’s Papiss Cisse blighted a previously good disciplinary record.
If Evans is to make his way to Goodison this summer, he will be one of many, in what could be a pivotal transfer window for the club, following a difficult season which has failed to live up to expectations.
