Everton are reportedly interested in making a move worth £40 million for Southampton defender Virgil van Dijk, according to a report from The Mirror.
The Netherlands international has been in sublime form so far this season, with him standing out in Saints’ team after some excellent, dominating displays at the heart of the Southampton defence.

Boss Ronald Koeman was the man that signed the 25-year-old for Southampton in the summer of 2015 on deadline day for a fee of around £13 million and it comes as no real surprise to see him linked with a move for his compatriot this January. Van Dijk also admitted in the build-up to to the two clubs recent game that he still stays in contact with the Toffees boss and has a huge admiration for him, possibly giving Everton a much-needed edge should they pursue a deal.
The Blues have struggled this season both defensively and offensively, with Koeman looking set to make a splash in the January transfer window.
It’s going to take a huge fee to sign van Dijk either in January or in the summer, and the general consensus is that Everton will not shy away from forking out plenty of money for the Dutchman.
