Everton believe Tyrique George has the potential to become a full England international, according to The Athletic’s Patrick Boyland.
George turned down interest from clubs in Italy and Germany to rejoin Everton permanently this week, opting for a return to Merseyside after settling quickly during his loan spell last season. Everton have paid Chelsea an initial £18m for the 20-year-old, rising to around £24m with add-ons.
George came through Chelsea’s academy from the age of eight and became a regular for England’s Under-21s. He made 11 appearances for Everton on loan without a goal or assist, but did enough to convince David Moyes to make the move permanent.
There is said to be excitement at Everton over a young, largely English core taking shape, with George’s arrival following the permanent signing of Merlin Röhl earlier this week.
Moyes said Tyrique George “made a positive impression during his loan spell” and “settled into the group quickly.” George said he was “so happy to sign for Everton” and wanted to “score goals, and create goals” for supporters.
It’s a turnaround from the end of last season when there were suggestions that Everton would not pursue a permanent deal for George, but it’s now very clear that it was part of a game around the Toffees not wishing to trigger the £25m buy-out clause in the initial loan deal.
