- Everton lost their final game of the season against Tottenham.
- The Toffees’ last victory was against Chelsea in March.
- David Moyes has faced widespread criticism from Evertonians.
Everton’s defeat against Tottenham Hotspur marked the end of a disappointing season.
Two months ago, Champions League qualification was a possibility for the Toffees, but they could not capitalise on their position and ended their Premier League campaign in 13th.
But as David Moyes’ side went on a horrendous winless run stemming from March, they slipped in their efforts to claim a return to European football.
Everton’s manager continues to face criticism in light of the poor finish to the season, yet recent results have highlighted a squad that is low on confidence and, most importantly, quality.
Everton’s squad is not up to scratch
The frustration directed towards Moyes is understandable, as it stems from years of underwhelming action while Evertonians see clubs constantly leapfrog them.
But whatever your opinion on the manager, it cannot be denied that Everton simply do not have a good enough squad.
Three of the back four against Spurs were members of one of the worst sides in the club’s history, when they went on to finish 17th in 2023 and claim a meager total of 36 points.
The Toffees have improved since then, but it is difficult to show true progression when several members of the team do not have the quality needed to maintain a push for European football.
As the summer transfer window approaches, it is imperative that bold decisions are made, and Moyes clears the way for new starting players.
What does the future hold for David Moyes?
Moyes is on extremely thin ice, and while it seems he has the full backing from his superiors, a poor start to his next campaign will put him in a heap of trouble.
It is why the upcoming transfer window is arguably the biggest in his career.
With the need for a defensive overhaul, a genuine goalscorer, and the risk of losing star player Iliman Ndiaye, it is going to be a hectic summer at Hill Dickinson Stadium.
The Scotsman will be given the chance to prove himself as he attempts to build a team to his liking, but supporters have concerns that he will go on to spend over £100 million, and in the event of his potential sacking, the club is left with players signed under a different regime.
It feels the Toffees have now come to a crossroads, and if Moyes is going to be given the freedom to spend heavily in the summer, then the board is going to have to show a lot of faith in him, even if results continue on their current trend.
But if doubts are held over the 67-year-old, then maybe his time on Merseyside is up.
The next few months are going to be career-defining for Moyes as he tries to show that his club have serious ambitions to become a top side.
Yet one thing remains certain, his current side are not good enough, and large-scale changes are needed on the pitch.
