With Carlo Ancelotti’s move to Real Madrid all but complete, the Toffees are looking for a replacement.
Despite the initial thought that the Italian would be staying put on Merseyside, the move is all but done.
It may not have been the dream tenure that Everton fans had hoped for, but attentions must turn to a replacement.
The Blues are already scouting for a potential replacement in the hot seat at Goodison, with plenty of names mentioned.
One possibility is Wolves’ outgoing Nuno Espirito Santo as reported by Fabrizio Romano earlier today.
However, according to The Athletic’s Greg O’Keeffe, the Toffees are looking closer to their city rivals.
O’Keeffe reports that not only are Everton looking at former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez, but also Reds legend Steven Gerrard as a potential replacement…
As you can see from the above tweet, the club’s board have a list of potential suitors for the managerial position.
A move for either of Benitez and Gerrard would be a massively controversial one given their status.
Gerrard spent 26 years at Liverpool from academy to first team, captaining them to Champions League glory.
Appointing Gerrard as Everton manager would be a real slap in the face for the clubs fanbase.
However, it is hard to ignore his current success as a manager.
The Liverpudlian recently guided Rangers to their 55th Scottish title, and their first in ten years.
With Gerrard proving his ability in the managerial game, it is understandable that the Board is considering his appointment.
Despite that, it would be a move that was cause plenty of controversy between Evertonians.
