Everton have stepped up their attempts to lure Wayne Rooney back to the club from Manchester United, The Times reports.
Everton’s desire to strike a deal for the striker is clear, however, Rooney’s £250,000 a week wage could prove a stumbling block in any potential deal.
The 31-year-old is said to be keen on a return to Goodison Park after having spent the last 13 years at Old Trafford where he is now out of favour under Jose Mourinho.
Rooney was due to return from his holiday last night ahead of linking up with the rest of the Manchester United squad for the start of pre-season training on Friday.
Everton have already spent big this summer on the likes of Jordan Pickford, Michael Keane, Sandro Ramirez and Davy Klaasen and the club are intent on adding Rooney to that growing list.
The two Premier League sides have also met to discuss the potential transfer of Everton striker Romelu Lukaku, with both United and Chelsea chasing the player.
