So, the season is finished – de facto – and we’re 7th. Back in Europe.
That means we need significant squad depth, as showed against Chelsea when we brought on Arouna Koné as Willian entered the fray for the Champions. We simply haven’t got the quality across a 22 man squad to fully embrace the Europa League as much more than a nice distraction. We have a phenomenally talented 12 or 13 players, and if we can transfer – no pun intended – that ability to form a full squad then we can be a real threat both domestically and in Europe.
Of course, the only way we’re doing that is through the transfer market. Love it or hate it, the excitement of transfer season is unavoidable, and usually, it’s often excitement unfounded in any real substance. This year is going to be different, though – acting as if I speak with any authority – as it’s Koeman’s first real shake-up of the squad.
There’ll be outs, and there’ll be ins.
So, I’ll pick out five players that I think Everton should be after and should be 5 top, realistic targets. In no particular order…
