After being shunned by Napoli in a bid to sign Kalidou Koulibaly last summer for a club-record fee, Everton have returned to Serie A in search of a big-ticket centre-back.
According to the Mirror, the Toffees are weighing up an opening £25m offer to sign Alessio Romagnoli from AC Milan to add some youth to his ageing defensive group.
Both Phil Jagielka and Ashley Williams are on the wrong side of 30 and are well into the Autumn of their careers, with Ronald Koeman eager to bring in a long-term replacement this summer to help build a Champions League calibre squad.
The 23-year-old centre-back already has over 100 Serie A appearances to his name and is a full Italy international. Under contract until 2020, he won’t come cheap.
Koeman has also prioritised signing a top-class goalkeeper with both Maarten Stekelenburg and Joel Robles struggling this season. Leicester star Kasper Schmeichel and Sunderland stopper Jordan Pickford are the Toffees’ top targets.
