Everton are expected to reignite their interest in Southampton defender Jose Fonte when the January transfer window reopens but they face stiff competition from Manchester United, according to the Mirror.
The Toffees tried and failed with a £9m bid for Fonte in the summer as Ronald Koeman was looking to reunite himself with the Southampton centre-back following two successful seasons at St Mary’s.
Fonte’s believed to be happy on the south coast for the time being, but he’s recently turned down a new £80,000-a-week contract because he’s not happy with the terms.

His current deal expires at the end of next season and the Portuguese international would like to see the duration of his contract extended before agreeing upon new terms – something Southampton have been so far unwilling to do.
This has alerted both Everton and Manchester United who will both consider January moves if Fonte’s contract situation is still up in the air.
It could be argued that United are in the driver’s seat regarding this deal, seeing as both Fonte and manager Jose Mourinho are both represented by Jorge Mendes.
