The Blues fell behind in the first half after a contentious challenge from Alvaro Negredo on Maarten Stekelenburg. The Spaniard went up for a header with the Dutch stopper who looked to have both hands on the ball, but fumbled it into his own net under pressure from Negredo.
Everton quickly equalised through Gareth Barry, the ball falling to the veteran at the back post who placed calmly into the gaping net.
Just before half time the Toffees then took the lead, this time through Seamus Coleman after a brilliant passing move, the Irishman slotting into the bottom corner past Victor Valdes.
Everton sealed the game through Romelu Lukaku with the Belgium getting the faintest of touches from Yannick Bolasie’s goalbound cross.
The Blues face Norwich next in the League Cup as the Canaries visit Goodison on Tuesday evening.
