It has been well documented that Everton have a fine batch of young talent, described by Gareth Barry as Everton’s Fab Four; Romelu Lukaku, John Stones, Ross Barkley and Gerard Deulofeu.
But with half the season gone and Everton sitting in 11th place such promising young talents will be difficult to keep hold of should Everton’s form not drastically improve. For this reason the League Cup is so important to Everton as with three wins, Everton can secure a Europa League place for next season.
The reason that place is so important is that the best players want to play in the best competitions and even though the Europa League may not be the creme de le creme, it sure is a good competition for Everton to be in.
And that little extra bit of European allure may just be enough to keep hold of our good young talent who, with some nurturing and a few extra top quality seasoned pros, could push for the title in a few years.
Also the final and most obvious reason is that agonising 20 year wait which has seen a whole generation of Evertonians not witness the Mighty Blues lift a trophy. So hopefully with grit and determination, we can finally get our hands on some silverware. You never know, success breeds success.
