1) The Blues still can’t defend set pieces
An Achilles heel for Everton since Martinez took over, we are still vulnerable from balls lofted into the area, as demonstrated by the Hearts goal. Calum Paterson remarkably managed to beat 3 Everton players in the air to head the hosts in front from a corner. Whether it’s a rethink to the approach we use, or the keeper simply taking more responsibility, this is an area we have to get sorted urgently.
2) We look fitter than last year
Last year’s pre-season, off the back of the World Cup, the players looked knackered. With no major tournaments this summer, it seems like the squad is suitably more refreshed than it was 12 months ago.
3) Everton need a number 10
Everton absolutely dominated possession, but the forward players often needed 2 or 3 touches to bring the ball under control and look up, meaning the momentum of moves were often interrupted. We need someone who can not only think quickly, but also act quickly, and have the vision to pick players out. Until this is addressed, we’ll always struggle against those teams who come to Goodison looking for a point.
4) A striker also a must
Hearts’ diabolical defending allowed us to create numerous chances, but the quality of finishing on the whole was poor. Kone once again did nothing to convince anyone he’s got what it takes. Even Lukaku, who despite scoring a hat-trick (two of which were penalties) was pretty wasteful, blasting 2 or 3 good opportunities off target. Beyond Lukaku, it’s only really Mirallas or perhaps Naismith who you feel has a goal in them. That’s simply not enough.
5) Leighton Baines is crucial
Ok, so everyone already knows how important Baines is, but his return today highlighted once again that most good things Everton do go through the left-back. His vision and distribution bring others into play, and his overlapping runs create space for others to exploit. His return is a welcome one.
